The journey to Neelkohra

01 Sunrise

The peaks turn rose before the town wakes

From the ridge above Kohraghat the Dhauladhar-style range catches first light. We pack a flask of kahwa and walk you to Suraj Tibba, our sunrise point, while the prayer flags are still wet with dew.

02 Tea gardens

Terraces of tea, combed by the morning fog

The estate below the hotel has grown green tea since the old planters' days. Walk the rows with a picker, learn the two-leaves-and-a-bud pluck, then taste first and second flush on the verandah.

Tea on the menu

03 Waterfall

Tranquillity, under the buransh

A forty-minute trail through rhododendron and fern leads to a cold, clear pool. In March the buransh blooms red over the water; we bottle its sherbet for your walk back.

04 Toy train

Five hours, a hundred bridges, one tiny blue train

The narrow-gauge line climbs from the Kalka railhead across stone viaducts and through tunnels. Ride it up, and our car meets you at the Kohraghat platform with a blanket and hot chai.

How to reach

05 Arrival

Lanterns on the drive, a fire in the hall

Neelkohra began life as a forest officer's lodge in 1911. Today its twenty-two rooms keep the deodar floors, the carved jharokhas and the slow evenings, with warm water, good Wi-Fi and a kitchen that cooks the hills.
